Kitab City, located in the foothills of the Zarafshan ridge, has about 50 thousand inhabitants.
Origin of the name of the city is still uncertain. Although the word “Kitob” is translated as “The Book”, there is a version that the history of the name derives from the word “Kieft-On” (Farsi – “Shoulder-Water”), due to the fact that this place is located between the rivers Oak Suv- Darya and Kashkadarya.
