According to the article 122 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan and article 11 of the Law On the principles of State independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan as well as Decree of the Higher Council of the Republic of Uzbekistan of September 3rd 1993 952-XII national currency soum was put into circulation from July 1st, 1994 in the territory of Uzbekistan.
It is the only legal means of payment in the territory of Uzbekistan.
At present there are bank notes of 1, 3, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 denomination called soums and coins of 1, 2, 3, 5,10, 20, 50 denomination called tiyin in circulation.
In 1994 the bank notes of 1, 3, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 denomination and coins of 1, 3, 5 denomination with yellow metal and coins of 10, 20, 50 denomination with white metal were introduced.
Later in 1997 bank note of 200 denomination, in 1999 bank note of 500 denomination, in 2001 bank note of 1000 denomination were put into circulation.
1 soum equals to 100 tiyin.
There is National Emblem of Uzbekistan on the right side of all bank notes.
There are various historical-architectural monuments depicting the history of Uzbekistan on the back of bank notes:
- front fragment of Sherdor Medrese situated in Samarkand with stylized image of tiger, carrying Sun on its shoulders on 200 soum
- monument of Amir Temur situated in Tashkent on 500 soum
- building Museum of Temurids History on 1000 soum
