General information. Republic of Uzbekistan is situated in the centre of Eurasian continent, between two rivers Amudarya and Syrdarya. Border on with Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan.

Population is approximately 25 million people (urban population - 38%, rural population - 62%). Population density - 53 persons for a square kilometer. Share of labour force is 49%. National structure consists of mainly Uzbeks (74,5%), then Russian 3,9%, Tadjiks - 5,5%, Kazakhs - 4,1%, Tatars - 2,4%, Koreans - 0,9%.

State organization. According to the Constitution adopted on December 8th 1992, Uzbekistan is sovereign democratic republic.

Uzbekistan consists of Republic of Karakalpakistan and 12 provinces: Andijon, Bukhoro, Jizzakh, Qashkadaryo, Navoiy, Namangan, Samarkand, Surkhondaryo, Syrdaryo, Toshkent, Farghona, Khorazm.

1. Toshkent viloyati

Toshkent viloyati is situated in north-eastern part of Uzbekistan between western slopes of Tyan-Shan mountain range and Syrdarya river. Total area is 15 300 square kilometers. Climate is sharply continental with mild wet winters and hot dry summers.

Population is 4 450 000 people and average population density is 147 persons for a sq. km. Province consists of 15 administrative districts. Administrative centre of the province is Tashkent city with population of over 2 million. There are 16 towns in the province. The largest towns are Angren, Almalyk, Ohangaron, Bekobod, Chirchiq, Yangiobod and Yangiyul. It is rich in coal, copper, molybdenum, zinc, gold, silver, rare metals and others.

2. Republic of Karakalpakistan

Republic of Karakalpakistan is situated in south-western part of Uzbekistan, occupies north-western part of Kyzylkum desert and Amudarya delta. Total area of the Republic is 165 600 sq.km. Climate is sharp continental with very hot summer and cold snowless winter.

Population of Karakalpakistan is 1,4 million, mainly Uzbeks (32,8%) and Karakalpaki (32,1%). About 48% of population resides in rural areas, while 52% do in urban areas.

Republic is divided into 15 administrative districts, 12 towns and 16 villages. Administrative centre of the Republic is Nukus with the population of 236 700 people. Other main towns are Khodjeyli, Kungrad and Chimboy.

3. Andijon viloyati

Andijon province is situated in eastern part of Ferghana valley. Total area is 4 200 sq.km. Climate is sharp continental with sudden temperature drops between winter and summer temperatures.

Population of the province makes up 1 899 000 people, average density of population is 499 persons for a square kilometer. Province is divided into 14 administrative districts.

Administrative centre of the viloyat is Andijon with 303 000 residents. Other main towns are Asaka, Shakhrikhon, Khonobod, and Karasu. Natural resources of the province are oil, ozokerite and other mineral resources. At present there are 85 joint ventures.

4. Bukhoro viloyati

Bukhoro province is situated in south-western part of Uzbekistan. Kyzylkum desert occupies much of its territory. Total area is 39 400 sq.km. Climate is sharp continental and dry.

Population of the province makes up 1 384 700 people, from them about 68% reside in rural areas and 32% in urban towns. Province is divided into 11 administrative districts.
Administrative centre of the viloyat is Bukhara with 263 400 residents. Other important towns are Gizhduvon, Romitan and Kogon.

5. Jizzakh viloyati

Jizzakh province lies in the central part of Uzbekistan. Total area is 20 500 sq.km. Climate is sharply continental with relatively mild winters and hot dry summers.

Population of the province makes up 910 500 people, average density of population is 108 persons for a square kilometer. Province is divided into 11 administrative districts. Jizzakh town is the administrative centre of the province with 127 200 people. Other important towns are Gagarin, Gallaorol, Pakhtakor, Dustlik and Marjonbulok. There are 34 joint ventures in the province.

The province is mainly agrarian. The main products are cotton and wheat.

6. Farghona viloyati
Farghona province is situated in southern part of Ferghana valley. Total area is 6 800 sq.km. Climate is sharply continental with mild winters and very hot summers.

Population of the province makes up 2 597 000 people with 70,7% of the population living in rural areas. Province is divided into 15 administrative districts. Farghona is the administrative centre of the province with 214 000 people. Other main towns are Kokand, Quva, Quvasoy, Margilan and Rishton.

7. Qashkadaryo viloyat

Qashkadaryo province is situated in southern part of Uzbekistan. It is situated in the river basin of Qashkadaryo on western slope of Pamir-Alay mountains. Total area is 28 400 sq.km. Climate is continental, dry, with some parts being subtropical.

Population of the province makes up 2 029 000 people with 73% of the population living outside urban towns. Province is divided into 14 administrative districts. Karshi is the administrative centre of the province with 177 000 people. Other main towns are Shakhrisabz, Kitob, Koson, Muborak, Yakkabog, Guzor and Kamashi.

8. Khorazm viloyati

Khorazm province is situated in north-west of Uzbekistan. Total area is 6 300 sq.km. Climate is continental, with cold winter and dry hot summer.

Population of the province makes up 1 200 000 people with 80% of the population living in rural areas. Province is divided into 10 administrative districts. Urgench is the administrative centre of the province with 135 000 people. Other main towns are Khiva and Djuma.

9. Namangan viloyati

Namangan province is situated in north-eastern part of Ferghana valley. Total area is 7 900 sq.km. Climate is continental, with dry summer and mild wet winter.
Population of the province makes up 1 862 000 people with 62,3% of the population living in rural areas. Province is divided into 11 administrative districts. Namangan is the administrative centre of the province with 341 000 people. Other main towns are Kosonsoy, Pop, Uchkuduk, and Chust.

10. Navoiy viloyati

Navoiy province is situated in south-west of Uzbekistan among Kyzylkum desert. Total area is 110 800 sq.km. Climate is continental, dry.

Population of the province makes up 767 500 people with 59,4% of the population living in rural areas. Province is divided into 8 administrative districts. Navoiy is the administrative centre of the province with 128 000 people. Other main towns are Uchkuduk and Zarafshan.
11. Samarkand viloyati

Samarkand province is situated in the centre of Uzbekistan. Total area is 16 400 sq.km. Climate is continental and dry.
Population of the province makes up 2 322 000 people with 65% of the population living in rural areas. Province is divided into 16 administrative districts, average density of population is 149 persons for a square kilometer.

Samarkand is the administrative centre of the province with 368 000 people. Other main towns are Kattakorghan, Nurota, Urgut, Djuma and Aktash.

12. Surkhondaryo viloyati

Surkhondaryo province is situated in the south of Uzbekistan bordering with Afghanistan. Total area is 20 800 sq.km. Climate is continental with mild winter and hot summer.

Population of the province makes up 1 676 000 people with 79,8% of the population living in rural areas. Province is divided into 14 administrative districts. Termez is the administrative centre of the province with 95 000 people. Other main towns are Denov, Boysun, Sherobod, Shorchi and Sariosiyo.

13. Syrdaryo viloyati

Syrdaryo province is situated in the central part of Uzbekistan on the left side of Syrdarya river. Total area is 5 100 sq.km. Climate is continental and dry.

Population of the province makes up 648 100. Province is divided into 9 administrative districts. Guliston is the administrative centre of the province with 54 000 people. Other main towns are Baht, Syrdaryo, Shirin, Yangier.
